CASE 3

Today I took Gypsy, my 8 year old V in for her yearly shots.
It seems the vet gave her a 7 in 1 shot, her rabies shots and bordetella.
I left the office and within 15 minutes she threw up, I stopped the car at a
gas station and she got out and sat next to the car as I cleaned it up. It
was maybe 4 or 5 minutes, when she got up to get in the car, she had pooped
and could hardly walk. I put her in the car, called the vet to tell them I
was on the way. I arrived there in about 5 minutes. I had thought she had
died in the back seat on the way over the way she looked.
When I got there she sat up and was able to make it in. She was in a drunken
state. The vet said it was definitely a reaction to the 7 in 1 shot.
She didn't give her anything for it at the time as she was starting to come
out of it already and she did not want to tax her any more.
She stayed at the vet for observation for an hour and I picked her up
and brought her home. I was not home 15 minutes and I noticed whelps on her
ears. I called the vet and she called me back within 5 minutes. She said she
has seen dogs heads swell up, I called Gypsy into the room and her head was
indeed swelling that fast.
Needless to say, we jumped into the car for the 10 mile trip back to the vet
where she got a steroid shot. The vet and I then sat on the floor with her
for the next 45 minutes as the swelling and whelps started to go down. I took
her home and within and hour she was ready to go out to play and eat her
dinner. I have kept her quite all evening and she has been fine.
I will NEVER give her shots again. She is 8 years old and if this was her
first reaction in 8 years, it could have been her last.
It was a horrifying experience to say the least. The moral, Just watch your
dogs very carefully for reactions and I would get as much info as possible. I
would also never give any of my dogs all the shots at once again. It was a
total attack on the system. I am just glad she is alive tonight to snuggle in
bed with me. <sigh>
